What it is
Blithewold’s Bonsai Essentials program is a dated, ticketed, four-level bonsai workshop series held at Blithewold, the historic Van Wickle family estate with gardens and an arboretum at 101 Ferry Road (Rt. 114), Bristol, Rhode Island. Each level is a two-hour Sunday class (10 AM–12 PM) taught by Peter Olson. Level 1 covers tropical-bonsai care and basic pruning, Level 2 covers soil, lighting, fertilizing and wiring, Level 3 moves to cold-hardy trees and overwintering, and Level 4 covers heavy bending and grafting. The event pages say all four levels are required to receive Meraki Bonsai’s Certification of Completion in Bonsai Techniques. Registration is required, classes are limited to 12 and they are adults only. This listing is Learning. It is not a nursery shop and not a membership club.
Who it’s for
Rhode Island and southeastern New England adults who want a structured, small-group path from first tropical bonsai to cold-hardy trees and advanced wiring and grafting, with a completion certificate at the end. Single levels work for people who only want one class, such as the cold-hardy Level 3 with an included tree. People who want an ongoing membership club or a tree shop should look at Clubs or Nurseries listings.
Why it’s listed
This is a first-party public-garden education page. Each level has its own official Blithewold event page with a printed date, time, room, member and nonmember fee, class size cap, age rule, what’s included and an instructor bio. The levels form a sequenced curriculum with a stated certificate. It is curriculum and schedule first, not a shop blur, and not a scraped event-aggregator card.

Location
Blithewold, 101 Ferry Road (Rt. 114), Bristol, Rhode Island 02809; phone (401) 253-2707. Level 3 meets in the Education Room in the Welcome Center, and Level 4 meets in the Education Space. For context, the 2026 Hours page shows the gardens and grounds open Tuesday–Sunday, 10 AM–4 PM, from October 26 to November 23 (closed Mondays). The admission page lists adult general admission at $22 and says general admission does not include programming.
This is a public-garden class identity. Do not treat this Learning card as a retail bonsai nursery or as a membership club meeting hall.
Notes
- Category is Learning. Blithewold publishes dated, fee-printed, capped workshop pages that form a four-level curriculum with a completion certificate. It is not filed under Nurseries (Blithewold sells class seats, not trees) and not under Clubs.
- Instructor affiliation: the event pages describe Peter Olson as the head bonsai professional at New England Bonsai Gardens and an instructor in the Kaikou School of Bonsai. New England Bonsai Gardens is the Bellingham MA business behind the already-listed
bonsai-outletNurseries card. This card is a separate host, domain and category (Blithewold, a Rhode Island public garden), so it is not a duplicate. The certificate is branded Meraki Bonsai, which the pages do not otherwise explain. - Spelling inconsistency: the official pages spell the instructor’s surname both “Olson” and “Olsen.” This card uses “Olson,” the majority spelling on the Level 1, Level 2 and Level 4 page bodies.
- The Level 3 bio is partly written in the first person (“…I am looking to set up a new home for my bonsai program here at Blithewold”). It says the program moved from Robin Hollow Farm after its owners retired.
- Short lead time / cancellation: Level 3 is only four days after the check date. The next session after that is Level 4 on Feb 21, 2027. The Sep 27, 2026 Level 2 session was canceled (“New date coming soon!”), so students on the certificate track may face a gap. No 2027 Level 1–3 dates were posted at check. Level 3 and Level 4 pages showed no cancellation notice.
- Dates, fees, rooms and rules come from official pages checked on 2026-10-07 and may change.
- Geographic spread: Bristol RI is the plaza’s first Rhode Island listing. It is away from Tue Denver CO, Mon Orlando FL, Fri Carrboro NC, Thu Vienna VA, Wed Columbus OH, Tue Sep 29 Toronto ON and Mon Sep 28 Fort Pierce FL Learning geos.
