Plant City Bonsai — Bonsai 101 Workshop
Category: Learning Also called: Plant City Bonsai beginner class; PC Bonsai Bonsai 101; plantcitybonsai.com workshops (Clermont, Georgia)
What it is
Bonsai 101 is a one-day, hands-on beginner bonsai workshop taught at Plant City Bonsai, a bonsai nursery at 5607 Cleveland Hwy, Clermont, Georgia 30527 in north Georgia. The nursery’s own site describes it as “one of the largest bonsai nurseries in the Southeast,” with hundreds of bonsai and pre-bonsai trees plus soil, tools, pottery and wire. In the workshop, each student sculpts and transplants raw tree material into a bonsai pot to take home. This listing is for the class program; the nursery itself is mostly set up for in-person visits.

Who it’s for
Complete beginners in north Georgia and the Atlanta–Gainesville area who want a single-day, hands-on class in a working bonsai nursery and want to leave with their own potted, wired tree.
Why it’s listed
It is a dated, priced, curriculum-first class page on the nursery’s own site. Checked on 2026-10-30:
- Next dates: Saturday, November 7, 2026 or Saturday, December 5, 2026, 10 AM–2 PM.
- Fee: $150, which includes a juniper or small Harlandii boxwood bonsai, a training pot, soil and use of tools.
- What you learn (as posted): 1) how to find the front of your tree; 2) basic wiring, trimming and styling; 3) potting your tree into its bonsai pot; 4) that bonsai live outside year-round unless tropical. The page adds a brief lecture, then hands-on trimming, pot preparation, placing and wiring the tree into the pot, bonsai soil and root work, and “MOST important” watering, fertilizing and winter and summer care.
- Format: the Workshop Information section says classes typically run spring through fall, on Saturdays starting at 10:00, and last 4 to 6 hours, with a brief lecture followed by hands-on work. Trees are included in the beginner class. Tools are available to use, though students are encouraged to buy their own.
- More classes on the same page: an Intermediate juniper workshop ($265, date TBA), Penjing/Saikei planting ($175, date TBA), Redwood Forest workshop ($350, date TBA) and pine-care sessions with instructor Chuck Wheat.
Location
Plant City Bonsai, 5607 Cleveland Hwy, Clermont, Georgia 30527. Phone (770) 983-3377; email [email protected]. Nursery hours (Contact page): Wednesday–Saturday 10:00 AM–5:00 PM, Sunday 1:00–5:00 PM, closed Monday and Tuesday.
Notes
- Finn flags: the home page says “We are changing/updating the workshop info,” and most non-beginner workshops on the page are “Date: TBA.” The page’s “Sign Up” buttons and “Pay on Line” tab go to the nursery’s Square Market Place store; the Workshops page notes that many past workshops still show there but are not available. Site footer reads © 2021. A May 10 bonsai exhibit by the North Georgia Bonsai Group is still shown with no year. The domain has bot protection: on 2026-10-30 each cited page returned 200 on a normal read, but repeated automated checks got a 202 challenge page instead (the same thing earlier Bonsai Plaza checks saw).
- Category note: Plant City Bonsai was earlier considered as a Nursery and passed over because its site has no clear online tree cart. It is listed here under Learning, for its dated, priced beginner class.
- Related listings: the Atlanta Bonsai Society (Clubs) and Maple Ridge Nursery (Nurseries, Gay, GA) are already on Bonsai Plaza and are separate organizations. This is the first Georgia listing under Learning.
- Listing image: the nursery’s official logo from its site (
plantcitybonsai-logo-large.png), placed on a light panel so the white tree in the logo shows; saved asplant-city-bonsai-bonsai-101-workshop-logo.png. - Not affiliated with Bonsai Plaza. No sign-up, payment, form or contact was made.
