What it is

The Bonsai Society of San Francisco (BSSF) is a San Francisco club for bonsai professionals and enthusiasts. The official home page: community and enjoyment through the art of bonsai — whether defined simply as a tree in a tray or as living fine art — bringing people together in joy and curiosity. What We Do (home): gather monthly in San Francisco; create and exhibit bonsai for members and the public; educate practitioners through seminars, demonstrations, and workshops; connect the public to local expertise. Members gain monthly meetings, discounted workshops and seminars, group-funded materials purchasing, and announcements (Membership page). The Events page publishes a standing 2nd Thursday meeting at the San Francisco County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park, plus dated workshop, auction, and demo programs. A first-party Learn section offers Bay Area–focused beginner materials (basics, care calendar, Japanese black pine guide) as club resources — not a separate Learning-category identity. It is not a commercial nursery and not a museum tuition class series.

Who it’s for

San Francisco Bay Area bonsai enthusiasts — beginners through advanced — who want club fellowship, monthly meetings with workshops and guest artists, club auction access, and BSSF community. Membership page: access to monthly meetings, discounted workshops/seminars, and group materials purchasing. Events page: participation in club events is limited to dues-paying members, but prospective members are welcome to observe or join on a first visit. Guests and new members should confirm each event on the Events calendar.

Why it’s listed

This is a first-party club site with a printed County Fair Building meeting address, published 2nd Thursday 7:00 p.m. schedule, 2026 calendar-year dues (including mid-year half-price buttons on the check date), and dated 2026 Events (auction, workshops, demos) — not a Facebook-only club and not a scraped directory card.

  • Meeting place / schedule (Events — checked 2026-09-16): regular monthly meetings the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m., San Francisco County Fair Building, 1199 9th Ave, San Francisco, CA 94122 (club rooms in Golden Gate Park; staff parking lot behind the building, accessible from Lincoln Way through a gated driveway — permitted only during scheduled meeting times). Typical meeting windows on event cards: 7:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m.–9:30 p.m. depending on the program.
  • Membership / dues (Membership page — checked today): 2026 calendar-year Individual $30.00; Household (up to four same-household members) $50.00. On the check date the live buttons showed Mid-Year half-price for the remainder of 2026: Individual $15.00, Household $25.00. Benefits: monthly meetings, discounted workshops and seminars, group-funded materials purchasing, announcements.
  • 2026 Events sample (Events page — checked today): January 8, 2026 Repotting Demo (Mugo Pine; club president Jhune Clemena; 7:00–9:30 p.m.); March 12, 2026 Mame Workshop with Robert Potts / Rough Cut Pottery — club-subsidized $25 per participant (mame under ~10 cm; handmade pot); July 9, 2026 Pruning Workshop (conifer/broadleaf; bring pointed pruning scissors and gloves); August 1, 2026 group nursery trip 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. (details TBD on page); August 13, 2026 Beginners Workshop (bring-your-own-tree; limited soil for minor repotting); September 10, 2026 Annual Club Auction 7:00–9:00 p.m. (trees, pots, tools, materials; all proceeds support BSSF — auction date already passed as of this check). Past public community pointers on the same calendar include Cherry Blossom Festival shows and Bonsai Garden at Lake Merritt Mammoth Auction/Sale (those are labeled public community events, not BSSF dues meetings).
  • Learn resources (Learn page — checked today; club materials, not this directory’s Learning category): The Very Basics of Bonsai; Bay Area Care Calendar; Snippets of Bonsai Wisdom; Japanese Black Pine Care Guide.

Dues, meeting times, workshop fees, and 2026 event dates above are what the official pages showed on the check date. They can change. Confirm on the live Membership and Events pages before joining or traveling.
