What it is

The Tucson Bonsai Society is a bonsai club in Tucson, Arizona, “Established 1972,” focused on growing bonsai in the Sonoran Desert. It holds monthly public meetings at 12:00 noon on the second Sunday of each month at EcoGro Nursery, 657 W. St. Mary’s Road, Tucson, AZ 85701. The society is a registered non-profit charitable organization.

Who it’s for

Southern Arizona growers, from beginners to experienced hobbyists, who need advice that works in desert heat. The membership page notes that most books and websites “do not take into account the desert extremes encountered by our plants.”

Why it’s listed

It is a long-running local club with a published meeting schedule, a permanent venue and its own teaching program. Checked on 2026-10-21:

  • Meetings: second Sunday monthly at noon, EcoGro Nursery (meeting room to the left of the front door; park in the dirt lot to the west). Each meeting has announcements and show-and-tell, a seasonal program, a raffle, and mentor help with shaping, potting and wiring. On that schedule the next meetings fall on Sunday, November 8 and Sunday, December 13, 2026 (these dates are worked out from the rule; the site gives no dated list).
  • Classes: the society’s own Bonsai Basics classes at Harlow’s Nursery, under a covered pavilion. They include a class workbook and the use of tools and wire, with a limit of 15 students.
  • Member benefits: mentors at meetings and workshops, seasonal workshops and home-garden tours, an annual auction, a local source for tools, wire and pottery, and an annual seminar with a guest teacher. You can enroll and pay online.
  • Exhibition: the 55th Annual Art of Bonsai Exhibition is set for May 15–16, 2027, 8:30 AM–4 PM, at Tohono Chul Gardens, 7366 N Paseo del Norte. It is free with garden admission.
